MeetĀ
Dr. Stephen C. Peters
Dr. Stephen Peters is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist and internationally
recognized equine neuroscientist. With more than three decades of experience in brainĀ research and clinical practice, he brings together human and equine neuroscience toĀ support thoughtful, science-informed horsemanship.
He completed advanced training in neurotrauma, neurosurgery, and neurology atĀ Hartford Hospital and later served as Chief of Neuropsychological Services in a largeĀ neurology practice, as well as Clinical Director of hospital-based brain health programs.
For more than a decade, Dr. Peters has presented neuroscience concepts to equestrianĀ audiences across the United States and internationally, including Canada and Europe, and by invitation at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. In recent years, he founded
Horse Brain Science Clinics, combining classroom instruction, live horseĀ demonstrations, and equine brain dissections to provide clear, practical insight intoĀ behavior, learning, stress, and welfare.
He collaborates with Jillian Kreinbring to present a five-day Functional Anatomy andĀ Horse Brain Science program at Colorado State University and Averett University inĀ Virginia. Together, they will also launch The Skeptical Horseman podcast this summer,Ā creating a platform for critical thinking and conversations grounded in peer-reviewedresearch.
Dr. Peters has appreciated opportunities to present to veterinary audiences in the United States and Europe. He has presented at Clyde Veterinary Hospital in Scotland and looks forward to upcoming presentations at Tierklinik Lüsche in Germany and at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in the summer of 2026.
Throughout his work, Dr. Peters has had the opportunity to collaborate with manyĀ professionals in the equine field. Some of those collaborations include Warwick Schiller,Ā Martin Black, Mark Rashid, Jim Masterson, and Sarah Schlote. He is also lookingĀ forward to an upcoming collaboration with Dr. Andrew McLean, bringing togetherĀ neuroscience and equitation science in continued exploration of the horseāhumanĀ partnership.
Dr. Peters is the author of Horse Brain Science: The Neuroscience of EthicalĀ Horsemanship. His forthcoming book, Horse Brain Science Simplified: A Foundation forĀ Equine Neuroscience, scheduled for release in October 2026, provides a practical andĀ accessible foundation for understanding how brain science applies to everyday workĀ with horses.
In 2012, he co-authored Evidence-Based Horsemanship with Martin Black, a book thathelped bring neuroscience into modern horsemanship conversations and remains aĀ cornerstone for many riders and trainers.
He is also co-author, with Mark Rashid and Crissi McDonald, of A Horseās Life: TheĀ Neuroscience of Equine Welfare, releasing this summer. The book draws from real-lifeĀ experiences in Mark and Crissiās work with horses, with Dr. Peters offering scientificinsight into the behavioral challenges explored.
Dr. Peters lives in Colorado with his wife Michelle and their 6 horses, 3 AustralianĀ Shepherds, and a barn cat, where daily observation continues to inform his teachingĀ and research.
His Vision: Understanding the horseās brain is the most direct path to betterĀ communication, reduced stress, and deeper connection between horse and rider āĀ science serving the art of horsemanship.
Because of the Horse...
Iāve been able to bridge science and horsemanshipātaking what we know about the brain and using it to create trust, connection, and clearer communication between horses and humans.
2026 Presentations
Dr. Stephen C. Peters
DAY 1
ā Ā The Nervous System & the Horse
In this powerful introduction to horse brain science, Dr. Stephen Peters explains how safety, fear, arousal, and curiosity shape everything a horse does. Through clear neuroscience and real-life demonstrations, he shows why behavior is driven by survival wiring, how learning happens in the adaptive zone of the nervous system, and how understanding neurobiology allows us to expand a horseās world with patience instead of pressure.
DAY 2
ā Ā In the Presence of the Horse
In this reflective and science-grounded film, Dr. Stephen Peters explores how regulation, overwhelm, capacity, and safety shape a horseās internal world long before behavior ever appears. Youāll learn why welfare lives in the nervous system, how overwhelm quietly shuts down learning, and why stillness, pacing, and predictability are essential for true partnership. This is a deeper look at what it means to create environments where both horse and human can feel safe, organized, and genuinely connected.
Ā
ā Ā My Path to the Brain
In this personal and reflective film, Dr. Stephen Peters shares the life experiences that shaped his understanding of the brain, fear, safety, and regulation. From childhood observation to hospital work and eventually back to horses, he explores how nervous systems under pressure changed the questions he asks and the way he sees behavior. This is a thoughtful look at how safety, clarity, and connection shape not only horses, but the humans who stand beside them.
