Connecting with Horses & Riding with Synchronicity

Mel Fleming helps hundreds of people create extraordinary partnerships with their horses—where horses are open, expressive, exuberant, real friends, willing partners, and majestic athletes. Such partnerships are rare, but Mel is changing that.

“Learn how to win your horse’s heart, engage their mind, re-ignite their spirit, and empower their physical body through connection, understanding, communication, and optimal biomechanics.” — Mel Fleming

Mel is a leader in what she calls a Renaissance of Horsemanship—an evolution where horses are respected and valued as conscious, sentient beings with dignity and rights. She founded Connecting with Horses & Riding with Synchronicity in 2011, long before “connection” became a buzzword. Her journey began with a profound, intuitive “inner knowing” of horses—mental, emotional, and spiritual. Initially beyond words, she eventually developed ways to teach this skill: guiding people to drop ego and mental chatter, connect to their authentic selves, and trust their heart, body, and intuition.

“We have to connect to our own true and authentic self before we can truly connect to anyone or anything else.” — Mel Fleming

This deep connection also underpins Mel’s energetic healing and bodywork, supporting horses and humans mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

A skilled horsewoman, Mel has extensive experience starting horses, resolving behavioural challenges, developing performance horses, and rehabilitating those broken in mind, body, and spirit. She specialises in equine postural training, teaching riders to influence horses’ balance through their own body awareness.

Riding in Synchronicity means moving in perfect harmony—becoming like a centaur. Correct posture and biomechanics allow horses to stay sound, healthy, and athletic with ease. When the horse’s body opens through engagement and balance, their spirit shines—producing the proud, elevated, expressive posture seen in joyful play.

“Synchronicity,” as defined by Carl Jung, describes meaningful coincidences. Mel sees our horses and experiences with them as part of a grand design—guides and teachers on the ride of our lives.

Because of the Horse...

I am who I am. They have led me to be more aware, conscious, present, and mindful. They have taught me to focus and have feel, balance, and body awareness. They have led me down a spiritual path – experiencing soul-deep connection with them, and they have helped me understand people better, because we really are similar in so many ways.

DAY 1

Where Soul Meets Biomechanics - Develop a Connection that is Soul Deep

Description: Develop a connection that is soul-deep.

At this level of connection - where you truly see and feel your horse - they feel safe.

When we know how our horse feels, and care more about how they feel than achieving an outcome, connection and the relationship flourishes.

When the nervous system is able to fully relax, tension dissolves.

This release of tension is the true foundation of optimal biomechanics.

When we support horses emotionally and learn to develop our feel — physical, emotional, and energetic — we create the conditions where relaxation and trust can emerge. This depth of feel is only possible when we also let go and truly relax our own nervous system.

This is the starting place for creating a dream partnership with horses — and the essential prerequisite for developing optimal biomechanics.

From here, horses can become happy, healthy, sound, and athletic partners — able to express themselves freely and become the most magnificent versions of themselves, where their spirit soars rather than being broken.

Why Biomechanics Matter - even if you just trail ride.

Biomechanics are not just about performance for performance’s sake and developing a horse to their highest athletic potential. They are about a horse’s health, comfort, and long-term wellbeing, and about how easy and enjoyable it is for them to do the activities we ask of them — especially if we ride them.

When a horse’s posture and movement are developed in a way that feels good to them, their body can support the work more easily, with less tension and strain and movement will feel enjoyable to them. This leads to a happier, more comfortable horse — one who can move with greater ease, stay sound for longer, and genuinely enjoy their partnership with us.

A horse that moves with better balance and optimal biomechanics will also be a smoother more enjoyable ride for us - like driving a sports car and having power steering and good braking.

DAY 2

 What are Optimal Biomechanics?

This video explores what truly defines optimal biomechanics.

We look at what concepts like hindquarter engagement really mean and explain some key ideas in clear, simple, everyday language.

Biomechanics don’t need to be complicated. In fact, the more complex it is made to sound, the harder it becomes to apply in real life.

Instead, this video focuses on understanding movement conceptually — with a whole-body perspective — so we can see how the horse’s body works as an integrated, unified system, rather than pulling it apart into separate pieces.

When we understand how the body moves as a whole, developing healthy posture and functional movement becomes clearer, more achievable, and far more horse and human friendly.
